Leveling 1-70 Methods Explained

Hey everyone! This is an overview of the 3 most efficient leveling methods in Diablo 3 for the start of a new Season. Each method has advantages and disadvantages depending on the amount of players in the party and their class choices. Some methods require practice and coordination in order to work well.

Challenge Rift and it’s impact on leveling

Before you start leveling, you may complete the Challenge Rift. Completing the Challenge Rift rewards you with a cache of Bounty materials, Death’s Breaths, other crafting materials, gold and Blood Shards. I recommend the following usage:

  • at level 1, gamble for any beneficial starter item: Level 1 Gambling Sheet
  • at level 40, level your blacksmith to level 12 and try to craft a level 70 weapon with  up to “-30 level requirement” (if you craft a weapon with a crowd control secondary affix, you may reroll the other secondary affix to “- level requirement” (the chance to get it is pretty high in this case, but it’s expensive))

Short overview of all methods

Leveling with Massacre Bonus (Duration: 1h30min-2h30min depending on class)

The Massacre Bonus is an experience bonus that is granted for chain killing monsters. It doesn’t matter how fast you kill monsters as long as you are continuously hitting any. After not hitting any monster for a while, your kill streak will end and you will be rewarded with bonus experience. Massacre Bonus doesn’t work in Rifts! The best areas for chain killing monsters are Fields of Misery and Halls of Agony. Your goal is to stack your massacre bonus as high as possible. This method may require some practice and focus.

Rifting (Duration: 2h10min as 4-player group with some practice)

Rifting is probably the most common leveling method. You basically just do Rifts till you hit level 70. It doesn’t really require any coordination / focus / practice.

T6 HoA Traps (Duration: 1h30min with practice)

In this method you will kite monsters into traps in Halls of Agony Level 1 on Torment 6. You don’t have to deal any damage, the traps will take care of every monster. This method requires some practice and focus!

Detailed explanation of all methods

Leveling with Massacre Bonus (Duration: 1h30min-2h30min depending on class)

  1. Create a game on Hard (Adventure Mode)
  2. Pick and equip the Follower weapons
  3. Hire the Templar (if leveling solo)
  4. Do a Boss Bounty (Zoltun Kulle or Magda – you may have to remake the game)
  5. Grind Fields of Misery and/or Halls of Agony till level 70 (you can kill the Butcher for loot)
    • Focus on chain killing/hitting monsters to get a high kill streak
    • Craft a new weapon at level 8
    • Craft a new weapon every 5ish levels (see “General hints for leveling” for further information about crafting weapons)
    • Don’t forget to pick skills on the Follower at level 5, 10, 15, 20 (if leveling solo)
    • Check vendors for rings at around level 7-10

Rifting (Duration: 2h10min as 4-player group with some practice)

Pre level 8 phase

There are different things that you can do at the start. I personally prefer a split bounty run in the beginning for a chance to obtain Cain’s / Born’s plans. I’ve been testing such split bounty runs at different levels (1,3 (after ZK/Magda Boss Bounty), 8, 12, 20ish): at level 1 with Follower weapons it’s by far the fastest run.

Boss Bounty

  1. Everyone open a game on Master (Adventure Mode)
  2. Join the game of whoever has Zoltun Kulle or Magda as Boss Bounty
  3. Pick and equip the Follower weapons
  4. Kill the boss (if you run to Magda DON’T kill any mobs on the way to her) and switch the difficulty do Hard
  5. Grind Fields of Misery or Halls of Agony till level 8

Split Bounty Act 1

  1. Open a game on Hard (Adventure Mode)
  2. Pick and equip the Follower weapons
  3. Split Bounty Act 1 – Boss together after you completed the other 4 bounties (whoever finishes his bounty first should run to the boss – everyone else help eachother after finishing your bounty)
  4. Talk to Tyreal and open the bounty cache (The plans can already drop at level 1 and you can also craft the sets at level 1, but you can’t equip it before you reach level 21/23)
  5. Grind Fields of Misery or Halls of Agony till level 8

Haedrig’s Wife Trick

  1. Start the Campaign on Hard
  2. Quest till you have to kill Haedrig’s Wife in the cellar in Tristram (don’t kill too many monster – just rush)
  3. Kill Haedrig’s Wife but DON’T talk to Haedrig
  4. Leave game
  5. Switch difficulty to Torment 6 and continue the campaign (“Resume Game”)
  6. Talk to Haedrig

Level 8-70 phase

  1. Craft a level 8 weapon
  2. Check vendors for rings: prefer damage range rings (Everyone leave town before you start checking vendors – just teleport to any Waypoint and make sure that everyone is outside of towns, before you go back to check vendors)
  3. Rift till 70
    • Someone teleport to town when Rift Guardian spawns and closes the Rift as soon as possible
    • Start a new Rift as soon as the 30s timer is over
    • Salvage items during the 30s timer only
    • Craft a new weapon every 5ish levels during the 30s timer only (see “General hints for leveling” for further information about crafting weapons)
    • Pick up items during rifting till your inventory is full

T6 HoA Traps (Duration: 1h30min with practice)

  1. Open a game on Torment 6 (Adventure Mode)
  2. Teleport to Halls of Agony Level 1
  3. Find the traps (the blades that are falling down)
  4. Kite all nearby monsters into the traps
    • Use crowd control abilites to slow down mobs under the traps
  5. Repeat

General hints for leveling

  • Equip any cosmetic pet – cosmetic pets pick up gold
  • Crafting weapons:
    • 2-handed swords available at: 15, 19, 23, 27, 32, 38, 44, 50, 55, 57, 61, 70
    • 2-handed axes available at: 8, 16, 21, 29, 33, 37, 41, 50, 54, 58, 61, 70
  • If you didn’t do the Challenge Rift: At level 42+ try to craft a level 60 weapon with – lvl requirement (if you craft a weapon with a crowd control secondary affix, you can reroll the other secondary affix to – lvl requirement (the chance is pretty high, but it’s expensive!))
  • At level 61 craft a new weapon
  • Stay close to monsters when you level up, because leveling up releases an explosion which deals damage
  • Movement speed is important
  • Get a helmet with a socket as soon as possible and put in a ruby
  • Keep all Bovine Bardiches and Puzzle Rings for post 70 gearing
  • Don’t hesitate to adjust the difficulty if you think you are killing too fast or too slow (Rifting and Massacre Bonus: Hard, Master, Torment 1; T6 HoA Traps: T6 ofc!)

  1. I really appreciate you making this site and the sum up here, but for overview reasons it was so much better to have this info in your spreadsheet! 🙂

    • As it’s a fairly common drop (me and my party usually get 2-3 while leveling) I’m gonna say don’t bother with the story mode for it, the increase is minor compared to born/cain and the time spent on it is simply not worth it anymore

  2. Great guide as always. Just a quick observation on rolling a level 70 weapon when you reach 40. 2 handed weapon with cc as a secondary normally has 4 options for other secondary – however if you roll a weapon with both cc as a secondary stat and LPH as primary it can only roll 3 options for the other secondary. So the chance of rolling level reduction is much better. In the same vein 2 handed scythe has an additional secondary option so it has less chance to roll level reduction.
